The NETHERCUTT COLLECTION & THE AMERICANA- Thursday, May 24, $49, Sylmar, CA & Glendale, CA

J.B. Nethercutt, the co-founder of Merle Norman Cosmetics, began his collection of antique musical instruments, fine furniture, rare automobiles, self -playing mechanical instruments, and locomotives in 1956.  His personal collection was later transformed into a museum.  Our docent led tour includes the opulent Grand Salon with perfectly restored vintage automobiles, automated mechanical musical instruments (including a Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Pipe Organ), Louis XV furniture, and a steam locomotive (with a restored 1912 Pullman private train car).  The museum also has one of the world’s largest collections of “Orchestrions”: automatic playing mechanical musical instruments more than a century old.  From there, we’ll travel to Glendale for an afternoon at “The Americana.”  If you like the Grove in Hollywood, you’ll love “The Americana” (It’s owned by the same company!).  This upscale outdoor shopping center offers a variety of boutiques, department stores, and more. Lined with beautiful fountains, make sure to head to the main fountain and be amazed at the water and lights “dancing” to the music at set times. If you get tired of walking, hop on board the shopping center’s trolley that will take you around the plaza. There are also plenty of restaurants to unwind at after a long shopping haul.
