CURT TUCKER’S “TASTE of L.A. #2”– Thursday, August 24, $109

Join us on Curt’s NEW food-themed adventure, as we explore the history, culture and cuisine of several neighborhoods of L.A. and the opportunity to sample their local delicacies. In Pasadena, we’ll see the early 1900’s era Arts & Crafts period homes in Bungalow Heaven, as well as the architecturally significant Cal Tech, Pasadena City Hall and Castle Green. At Pasadena’s top new bakery “Fresh Bread!” we will sample delicate breads and pastries. Even as it gets a facelift, and with its diverse mix of residents, Eagle Rock is holding onto its quirky blue-collar spirit. Here, we’ll visit a family-owned bakery and café that has handed down Filipino recipes through three generations! We’ll try their delicious “Lumpiang Shanghai,” a bite-sized egg roll filled with ground pork and shrimp and fried to a crispy golden brown, as well as a Filipino-style sponge cake that is made with purple yam. Lunch is included at The Smokehouse restaurant.

DEL MAR RACETRACK -Thursday, August 31, $79

SEPTEMBER

VENTURA COASTAL OVERNIGHT– September 12 & 13, Single $258/ Double $189 per person

Leave the summer heat behind as we escape to the coastal town of Ventura! On our ride there, we will stop for a tour of the Adolfo Camarillo Ranch house. This Victorian home was once the residence of Adolfo Camarillo, the founder of the city. Lunch will be on your own. After lunch, we will stop at the Olivas Adobe Museum which is one of the oldest existing homes in the city of Ventura. Mid-afternoon, we will check into our hotel, the Best Western Plus Ventura, and you will have the rest of the day to walk the beach, see the pier and enjoy downtown Ventura’s shops and restaurants. Dinner will be on your own. The next day, after your complimentary breakfast, we will take a short walking tour through Plaza Park for a tour of both the Mission San Buenaventura & Gardens and the Ventura County Museum. That afternoon, lunch will be provided at Super Panda. Let’s have some fun in the sun!

“A BITE OF L.A.” FOOD TOUR– Wednesday, September 20, $80

Join Silver Lining owner Jerry Hagan as he takes you to some of the most famous food icons of Downtown L.A. Our first stop will be a tour of Homeboy Industries & Café. Founded in 1988 by Father Gregory Boyle, Homeboy serves as a beacon of hope and opportunity for those seeking to leave gang life. Homeboy is a place where former enemies bake bread side by side, learning the art and science of preparing breads, pastries, cakes and much more. Homeboy Industries is recognized as the largest and most successful gang intervention and re-entry program in the world, and has become a national model. From there, we will go to one of the oldest restaurants in L.A. for lunch at Philippe’s! Since 1908, Philippe’s has been serving some of the best French dips in the world. After lunch, we will head to the Grand Central Market. Recently, it has boomed with 38 food stalls (23 of which are new arrivals in the last 3 years). Food tastings are included! The trip will also include a stop by the landmark Bradbury Building and the Angel’s Flight funicular.

Next, we will take the short trip to the scenic Riley’s Farm in Oak Glen. There, we will go back in time and relive colonial America. A country meal, hayride and living historical re-enactments are also included. Music will be performed throughout the afternoon!

Back by popular demand!! Our first trip to JPL sold out quickly in June and we have added a second date. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena is the lead center for robotic exploration of our solar system. Our docent guided tour will include a multimedia presentation, an overview of JPL’s activities and accomplishments followed by a walking tour of the campus to see Mission Control. This will be an afternoon tour and lunch will be provided at Buca di Beppo in Old Town Pasadena prior to the tour. Government issued ID required. Limited Seats!!! If Silver Lining Travel cancels an event, registrants will be offered a full refund. Should circumstances arise that result in the postponement of an event, Silver Lining Travel has the right to either issue a full refund or transfer funds to the same event at the new future date. Persons wishing to cancel their reservation 45 calendar days prior to an event will not receive a refund. Any cancellations made prior to the 45 calendar date are subject to a $10 cancellation fee.
